A five-story mixed-use office building is set for construction at 6201 Sunset Dr.

The South Miami city commission met at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17

The main item

Commissioner Gabriel Edmond was the only commissioner to dissent on the 4-1 vote to approve a special exception to construct a five-story development at 6201 Sunset Dr.

The site is 40,998 square feet and has a parking garage behind it. The building will be a total of 65,739 square feet, with retail, office and medical space.

“It’s a good building …a very attractive building,” City Manager Steven Alexander said. “I think the property owner has been very willing to work with the city and do as much as they can to try and alleviate traffic concerns. I look forward to the additional revenues that the building will supply.”

Other business

  • Australian Pines: The removal of 18 Australian Pines at Dante Fascell Park, Fuchs Park, and South Miami Park was approved unanimously. The city manager can expend an amount not to exceed $24,300 to Big Ron’s Tree Service, LLC. for the removal.
  • Janitorial Service: Edmond also dissented on the 4-1 vote authorizing Alexander to negotiate and enter into a three-year agreement with Southern Carpet Care Inc. DBA Elite Maintenance & Management Co. for janitorial services as requested by the city.
  • Restaurants Approved: The commission unanimously approved a resolution for a Dr. Smood restaurant at 5801 Sunset Dr. The commission also unanimously approved a special use approval to convert a former dry cleaner building at 5840 SW 71st St. to two new general restaurants.

They said it

“I wanted to give my colleague a heads up. In terms of Sunset Place, we have the new owners here. At least four out of five of us have raised issues concerning the workers at Sunset Place, which have been replaced. I had a meeting with the owners, who I had good feelings with when I met them. I like both of them. I would like to facilitate a meeting between the workers and the owners, not determining what comes from that meeting, but have a dialogue…I’m going to try and encourage our friends at Sunset Place to just have a dialogue.” — Commissioner Gabriel Edmond
